Knit Dresses for a New Graduate

Who doesn’t love a pretty knit dress? Easy care, and easy to wear!

My son’s girlfriend graduates from Gonzaga Law School May 10th, and soon after will be starting her new professional life as an attorney in Spokane. Like most recent grads, her wardrobe consists primarily of jeans and tops. What else do you really need for attending class + going for pizza and beer, right? Also like most recent grads, her bank balance has been depleted with the cost of attending school. Short story: I offered to make her an outfit for a graduation present, and she thought a knit dress would be the perfect choice. Nice of her to make things easy for me!

Simplicity 3775 (OOP) is my hands-down favorite knit dress pattern. I have 3 in my own closet, and fabric for two more waiting to be stitched up.

She picked the fabric for the red dress, but she also mentioned how much she LOVES polka dots. If one dress is a nice addition to a wardrobe, two is even better, right?!? Both dresses are View C without sleeves—easier to wear with a cardigan or jacket.

I used one of my favorite finishing techniques to bind the neckline and armholes of the red dress—black velvet foldover elastic. I think I bought this from M & J Trimming in NYC, but you can find it on Etsy and other places as well.

Just to mix it up a little, I used the binding pattern pieces and same fabric for the black dotty dress. I can just see this dress with a great necklace and a smart jacket. Smashing!

When I began my own professional life I well remember standing in front of my closet trying to figure out ways to stretch my wardrobe choices. I am so  happy to give someone else a few more options!

    • Can you purchase from eBay or Etsy? It is OOP, but it comes up often on both of those sites. Good luck!

  4. What a great idea for graduation. It’s even more difficult when the person is going into a profession that requires a certain dress code. Lucky lucky girl to have you as a Boy-friend-in-law.

  5. Great looking dresses! Nothing like being comfortable AND looking stylish when you go on those job interviews. That fold over elastic looks really sharp. I’ll have to track some down and give it a try.
