Jeannette Test Dress

Feature

Hey there everybody!  We’re delighted to be here for Indie Pattern Month and we’re going to try to enter something each week!  For Dresses week, we took the opportunity to test a pattern for a fairly new Indie Designer.  On The Cutting Floor let us test their soon to be released pattern, the Jeannette Dress.  This stunning dress is made from knit fabric, so it is comfortable too!  The curvy silhouette is achieved by the shaping of the center panel in both the front and the back.  We used some black knit from Girl Charlee to accentuate those curves even more!

The side panels are also shaped, but they turned out to be too large in the hips for my daughter, so we took in the sides a little more for her.  The floral knit fabric for the side panels also came from Girl Charlee as part of their bargain lots sale.  I got over 5 yards of it for less that $2 per yard, so I’ve already made a skirt for my Mom, and a light jacket for my youngest daughter.  And there is still about 1 yard left!  I only made one change to this pattern, and that was adding length.  I am 6 feet tall (183 cm!) and my daughters take after me, so…  I love the raglan sleeves on the Jeannette Dress.  Tall women usually have wide shoulders, so raglan sleeves work really well!  The sleeves are my daughter’s favorite feature of the dress too.

I wouldn’t recommend this as your first pattern if you’re new to sewing with knits.  The pattern assumes you know the basics of sewing with knits.  The instructions are very simplistic with minimalistic drawings.  But as soon as you gain just a little confidence, you will want to sew up a Jeannette Dress for yourself!  The sleeves are unhemmed (you can do that with knit fabrics, you know!) and the bottom has a band, so no hemming required!  Rarely do comfort and fashion come together so beautifully!  My daughter is still deciding if she likes this dress enough to add it to her regular rotation.  She’s not totally in love with the neckline.  So in the mean time, I’ll be wearing it!!!

    • Print in the middle is the way I would have made it for ME too, but when a teenager requests you make her something, you make it the way SHE wants! I do like it this way also, though!
