Introducing Ashley and Katy, from Katy & Laney

New to Indie Pattern Month this year are Katy & Laney – a modern, fashionable range of designs by two rather fabulous girls from the US of A. Kat caught up with them to find out more!

First up, tell us all a bit about your designs. How would you describe your style/aesthetic?

Laney: I would describe our style as simple, modern silhouettes with a twist. We like to start with basic shapes and practical garments, but add some interest through style lines and blocking.
Katy: Our vision is to design special pieces that work in everyday life.
Laney: We like to keep our brand aesthetic modern and streamlined.

How did your come up with the name for your label?

Laney: This was easy – it was a combination of our names, Katy Patzel and Ashley Laney.
Katy: We went pretty literal on that one! 🙂

We’d love to know the story behind your business. What inspired you to create and sell patterns? How did it all start?

Katy: Our business started as a blog in 2013. Originally we shared photographs of our sewing projects, but overtime we slowly expand our content to include tutorials and sewing tips. When my research position ended I had more time to devote to Katy & Laney and releasing patterns seemed like a natural progression for us. Both Laney and I had been designing patterns for personal garments and the thought was why not share our work with others.

And looking forwards, where would you like your business to be in five years time?

Laney: In the next five years we hope to have released many more patterns, and offer printed patterns as well. We really like the idea of launching patterns as seasonal collections.

Where do you do all your work? Reckon you can share a photo or two with us, so we can have a sneak peek at your workspace? 😉

Laney: We started working from Katy’s apartment when she was still living in Boston, drafting, test-fitting, digitizing and writing out of her living room.
Katy: With my recent move to Brooklyn we were able to move our operation out of the living room and into a spare bedroom. Now we have a dedicated sewing space and an honorary bedroom for Laney when she comes to visit. Laney lives in Boston and sews at Grey’s Fabric and Notions where she is a manager.

What’s your favourite part of releasing a new design?

Katy & Laney: Our favorite part of releasing a new design is seeing how other people interpret, adapt, and style our patterns. We love creating a block from which others are inspired to make it up to reflect their own taste and personality.

Thinking of your gorgeous designs, what’s your favourite of all your designs so far, and why?

Laney: My favorite is actually the Geometry Top because it’s so easy to wear and lends itself to so many fun fabric combinations and color-blocking and looks best in fluid silks, chiffons and rayons, my favorite fabrics to sew with and wear!
Katy: Oh man this one is hard for me. We put so much love into each it’s like picking a favorite child. If I had to choose it would probably be the Tap Shorts pattern. This pattern hold a special place in my heart since it was our first. I’m pretty proud of the pleated version, view b, because we muslined the heck out of it to get the proportions just right. I’m proud that we took the time to add special details, but still created a pattern that can easily be worn around town or to the beach.

Who or what inspires you, either with your designs or with your business? (Or both!)

Laney: We have so many sources of inspiration: sewing friends and other sewing bloggers, street style, vintage designs – sometimes even be from architecture and elements of nature.

Do you have any new patterns coming out soon? Any hints you can give us? (We’re so impatient, haha!)

Katy: We’re still adjusting after my move to Brooklyn, but we’ve got so MANY ideas! Hopefully we’ll have new things to share soon.

Thanks so much for taking the time to chat with us ladies! We’ll be looking forward to seeing where you go next with your designs. 🙂
