New to sponsoring Indie Pattern Month this year is Hot Patterns. With their huge catalog of patterns and 10 years in the business, they know what they’re talking about, let’s find out more…
Mel caught up with Trudy and Jeremy, the designers behind Hot Patterns…
Hi Jeremy! Welcome to Indie Pattern Month!
First up, tell us all a bit about your designs. How would you describe your style/aesthetic?
We’re always looking to create fashion forward patterns, with an eye as to what is current. We’re also conscious of the need to create styles that suit a a lot of different body shapes, as well as the need to ensure that our patterns are simple enough to sew by a variety of skill levels yet contain enough interest to inspire. I think that after ten years we have really achieved that.
How did your come up with the name for your label?
A flash of genius one day whilst I was laying in the bathtub. That’s our story and we are sticking to it lol
We’d love to know the story behind your business. What inspired you to create and sell patterns? How did it all start?
We’d worked all over Europe as pattern makers for some big designer names. I had always sewed, mainly out of frustration with the limited selection of designer clothes available to me as a plus sized woman. I’d been drafting my own patterns, but in a moment of frustration and due to a real lack of time went looking for some home sewing patterns in an attempt to sew myself something nice for a function I was going to. I was appalled by what was offered, there were no independent pattern companies back then and I saw what the big two were offering and was convinced that I could do better. Our move from the UK to the USA in 2004 saw that idea become a reality.
Looking forwards, where would you like your business to be in five years time?
Still making great patterns, we love what we do and we are very fortunate that we make a living doing it!
Where do you do all your work? We’d love to have a sneak peek at your workspace!
Check out our YouTube Channel, you’ll see me in my office!
What’s your favourite part of releasing a new design?
I love seeing what customers come up with, over the ten years we have been trading we’ve gathered a very talented bunch of ladies who are fiercely loyal to us and turn our patterns into some amazing garments.
Thinking of your gorgeous designs, what’s your favourite of all your designs so far, and why?
That’s a very difficult question. The one I wear the most is the tummy taming trouser with the woven T, but there have been many favorites over the years. I’m also loving our new Madame Butterfly dress.
Who or what inspires you with your designs?
I love bringing fashion forward sewing patterns to home sewing enthusiasts around the world, it’s that simple!
Do you have any new patterns coming out soon?
New patterns are always in the works, it’s a constant process! We aim to publish between 12 and 15 per year. Look out for a super cute new top at the end of June
