Polka dot day dress

I bought 2m of this linen cotton blend at Lincraft during a recent 50% off sale.  Too easy to fall off the non-stashing wagon when there is a bargain to be had.   I love how vibrant the colours are.   I had a few patterns in mind but decided on the polka dot day dress from Gertie’s ultimate dress book – probably because it has polka dots!

The dress is a boatneck midriff bodice, in the book it is paired with an all around pleated skirt that takes a lot of fabric.  I chose a simpler, less fabric hungry box pleated skirt.  I toiled and thought I had the correct size, but in the cotton linen I had to take it in a bit all around – perhaps due to the looser weave of the fabric.   Fabric constraints resulted in a skirt a bit shorter than I wanted, but after wearing it twice I’ve decided it doesn’t bother me too much.

It was quite quick and easy to put together.  I made most of it on a long weekend at the beginning of October, thinking I would want another dress or two for Frocktober (raising funds and awareness for the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation).  It had an outing at the Brisbane Spoolettes hand made frock swap (such a good idea and loads of fun!)

Polka dots for everyone!

About a week later I realised Gretchen Hirsch herself was in town and doing a meet and greet at the Spotlight closest to where I work.  Of course I picked my new Gertie dress to wear.  She also wore the polka dot day dress – so glamorous with the fuller all around pleated skirt, in the Rose Buds border cotton sateen from her latest fabric collection.

So nice to say Hello and hear about the fabric designing, charm patterns and more.  I’m hoping to make one of the newer Butterick Gertie patterns for a Christmas dress, might make a toile of that one this weekend ;o)
