Tell us a bit about your designs. How would you describe your style/aesthetic?
I design clothes that I wear and love to make. I’m a native of Southern California and style here is geared toward our warm weather so easy to wear with simple lines and lots of color fits the bill. What could be better for a sewist and fabric lover? As I’m drafting patterns and writing instructions, the success of the sewist is always in the forefront of my mind so I like to make sure pieces go together easily and the instructions are friendly.
How did you come up with the name for your label?
I have always loved and used the old school blue dot pattern paper when making patterns and I love blue. It worked!
We’d love to know the story behind your business. What inspired you to create and sell patterns? How did it all start?
Blue Dot Patterns started in 2014 not only out of my love of sewing but from my experience as a sewing teacher. I found that my students were frustrated with commercial sewing patterns so my vision with Blue Dot patterns is to inspire sewists through modern design and well-crafted patterns with friendly instructions.
Looking ahead, where would you like your business to be in five years time?
Where do you do all your work? May we have a sneak peek at your workspace?
I am fortunate to have a studio space in my home. It has glass doors, lots of natural light and a built in desk with a blue dot countertop. Not to mention a fabric stash, jars bursting with antique buttons, a dress form named Penelope, 3 sewing machines and usually my sweet German Shepherd, Miss Hazel, sitting at my feet.
What is your favorite part of releasing a new design?
My favorite part of releasing a design is seeing what my customers do with it! I love how creative people are! I know some designers get annoyed when their designs are changed but I like when sewists use my patterns as a jumping point for their own work.
Thinking of your gorgeous designs, what is your favorite of all your designs so far, and why?
If you were to look in my closet you would find several hangers filled with Margo Blouses! It’s comfortable and makes me feel feminine without feeling fussy.
Who or what inspires you, either with your designs or with your business (or both)?
Certainly the online sewing community is a great inspiration for me. Aren’t we fortunate to have each other? And my students constantly remind me why I love sewing. It never gets old teaching someone to do something that makes them feel good about themselves!
Do you have any new patterns in the works? Any hints you can give us?
Yes! The Dover Jacket is getting a new look that’s really fun and there’s a new pleated dress and t-shirt pattern that will be released early next year.
