Announcing the January Challenge

Make a new year’s reSEWlution to kick off 2019 with this fun challenge! No matter where you are in the world, you can have fun sewing something that is currently seasonally inappropriate! Here in the gray, dreary Pacific Northwest (United States), I’m thinking about making a sweet summer sundress in Swiss dot or cotton lawn. Or maybe a cute sleeveless summer top in cotton jersey? Meanwhile, the Southern Hemisphere summer has been teasing the Kiwis! Mel thinks it might not be so seasonally inappropriate to sew a coat just now as she looks out her window at the grumpy clouds! She wonders if cutting out a trouser pattern might coax the shorts weather back. Let’s see!

Closet Case Patterns was the obvious choice to sponsor this month’s challenge. No matter your local climate, there is a Closet Case pattern available to suit your needs. There are swimsuits, caftans, & cute little tees for hot weather, & a variety of jackets & jeans for cooler climates. & of course, practically any pattern can be customized for specific seasonal needs by changing up view details & textiles. Make a sleeveless jersey Nettie bodysuit for summertime or add long sleeves & sew it in lush stretch velvet for wintertime layering!

All challenge contributions posted during the month of January 2019 will be entered into a random drawing, & one lucky winner will receive a Closet Case Patterns PDF of their choice.

Closet Case Patterns has also generously created an exclusive promo code just for us! Enter code MONTHLYSTITCH at check-out for 15% off any order, including digitial or paper patterns, fabric, & hardware kits. The code is valid from January 1st 12:00am EST to February 15th 11:59pm EST, & is limited to one per customer.

Quick housekeeping note: we are resurrecting our Monthly Stitch email newsletter! Apart from challenge/sponsor announcements, we’ll also be featuring a different Monthly Stitch contributer each month, & curating some interesting sewing/fashion-themed links & news. Click the icon below to sign up!

You may have also noticed that the Monthly Stitch has a bright new color scheme for a new year. We haven’t decided yet if “sew yellow” is going to actually be a challenge at some point in 2019, but if you happen to incorporate some yellow into something you sew for one of our challenges, feel free to point it out!

  5. Welll given Christchurch’s penchant for weather entirely inappropriate for the season this challenge is ideal! I might finally get around to making my rain cape I keep telling myself I will make!

    • Sounds like folks in unpredictable climates may have an advantage with this challenge, since there’s no such thing as seasonally inappropriate for you! That’s kind of what it’s like in Kansas too–most of the year. July through September can always be counted on to be unbearably hot. But Portland is very predictable. Rain ten months out of the year, & intermittent clouds the other two months!

  6. Do we need to sign up to the newsletter if we already receive notifications? Is this a new thing? Feeling inspired with January theme to sew a swim suit!!

    • Like if you already receive notifications of new posts here on the blog? Yes, the newsletter is a separate entity. We’ll continue announcing the monthly challenges here, same as always, but the newsletter will also contain interviews with regular Monthly Stitch contributers, links to sewing/style/fashion news the editors found interesting, news on other sewing challenges around the internet, etc. Hopefully it will be something fun & interesting that Monthly Stitch contributers/fans will enjoy receiving in their email, in addition to all the content you’re used to seeing on the blog itself!

    • It’s very dreary & rainy where I live. I have some gingham swimsuit fabric that coordinates perfectly with the new yellow Monthly Stitch theme. I am half-tempted to make a swimsuit…Though it might be a little TOO seasonally appropriate for slogging through th rain!
