The monthly challenges

Every month, there’s a new theme on The Monthly Stitch to sew along to. You can interpret the themes however you like – they’re there to get you inspired! There’s no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ way to interpret them. (For example, during the ‘sewing double’ month contributors made two garments from one pattern, two things using the same fabric, mother-daughter matching dresses, and so on.)

The themes are announced near the start of the previous month, so you have a month to plan out what you’re going to make. You can see the current challenge, and the one coming up for the following month, down the bottom of The Monthly Stitch.

You can also see current, upcoming, and past challenges over here. Click on each one to see all the creations that were made by contributors for that challenge.

We like to involve the Monthly Stitch community as much as possible – after all, this is about all of you as well! At least one third of the challenges are chosen by reader vote. We also ask readers what challenges they’d like to see in the future, and add all the suggestions to our future challenges list.

We want your ideas!

Got a challenge idea you’d like to see on here? We’d love to hear about it! Let us know what it is by filling out the form at the bottom of this page.

Annual events

A couple of the themes are annual events. Indie Pattern Month happens every June – a celebration of all the amazing independent pattern designers, and the small businesses that support them by stocking their designs. Frocktober happens every October, to tie in with other online Frocktober events – it’s a month all about making (and wearing!) dresses.
