90s Throwback

I have no idea what’s trendy in the real world at the moment. If I walk into a shop on the high street I mostly feel lost. As sewers we create our own fashion and are not bound by trends and fashion, right? I could list several things that are trendy in the sewing world, both the blogging community and the Swedish sewing scene, which tend to differ quite a lot. For this challenge I did what anyone trendy-impaired would do: I Googled.

As it turns out the 90s are now far enough back to come back in trend and not just be hanging around. The 90s were the main part of my teens, but, just as now, I wasn’t very trendy. I dressed in a way not to stand out in a crowd or, if I was feeling brave, to convey political messages. I chose to do my own interpretation of 90s fashions and one thing that came to me was small scale floral prints, I remember my sister had a lot of this, some clothes she had sewn herself, a hobby she has since abandoned. I already had a small scale floral in my stash and I knew I wanted a blouse. To get the 90s feeling, I wanted it a bit loose-fit. I turned to Burda Wardrobe Essentials and used the Folded Yoke Blouse pattern (Burda 10-2012-122), which I had used before. This time I omitted the yoke to make a casual V-neck blouse.

The blouse came together quickly and I made French seams throughout (except on the facings because I forgot. But who’s gonna tell?). It feels so intrinsically wrong to put the wrong sides of the fabric together, but it does make a nice finish. I also hemmed my facings to get a really clean look on the inside.

Pretty insides, too!

There you go, my 90s blouse. Did I capture the decade properly?

The blouse is modelled with my Aqua skirt and my Olga in denim skirt.

    • Thanks! As sewers I think we do make clothes that we want to wear. Although, there are trends in the sewing world as well, they just don’t agree with high street trends.
