Check out my Gingham Blouse!

Helen from HsHandcrafts

I’m Helen and I blog over at H’s Handcrafts. This is my first post on the monthly stitch. I really enjoyed reading all of the posts and seeing your beautiful makes in Indie Pattern month so I felt inspired to join in and share with you my gingham blouse.

I only recently began sewing when I bought my machine back in January so my handmade wardrobe is still in it’s infancy. However, even with all my ready-to-wear clothes there is a distinct lack of checked items, not because I don’t like checks, but just that I have never really seen anything recently in the shops that I love. So, this was a great opportunity to put that right and add some gingham to my wardrobe!

For this blouse I used the Fashion with fabrics book that emerged from this years series of the Great British Sewing Bee. I loved the pattern hack for a sheer sleeveless blouse so depite there being many new-to-me components to this make I decided to give it a try!

I cut out a size 8 from pattern as this was the closest to my measurements. I could probably have done with a little smaller everywhere except the bust but I made a toile from some cheap cotton I had lying around and it didn’t seem too bad.

The sewing went fairly smoothly and the body of the blouse made up really quickly (French seams and all!). Next step was to tackle all the new to me parts including a collar, bias binding and buttons. These mostly went to plan except for a small hiccup with the collar which you can read about over on my blog .

All in all I am pretty pleased with this make!

The details:

Pattern:  Sleeveless Sheer blouse hack from The Great British Sewing Bee: Fashion with Fabric

Fabric: Mini check gingham cotton poplin

Notions: Black Gütermann thread, lightweight iron-on interfacing, Red Wooden Round Buttons (1.5cm)

Alterations: None

I think it will become a wardrobe staple. I am really pleased I went for red buttons as I think they make it more fun. Black buttons would have just made it an ordinary everyday blouse, not one that is special to me! If you want to read more about how I got on making this blouse you can find more details on my blog.

  1. Great blouse! I really love the gathering into the front shoulder yokes. And the red buttons are perfect for it. 🙂
