Rust and florals = NOT stashed!

Sewcialists, Happy New Year! I hope that everyone is off to a fabulous start, with bright new ideas and inspirations, and of course full of discounted fabric that you bought during Christmas shopping spree. Are you going to stash it? And forget about it? And won’t touch it? And save it for that special pattern?

I am guilty of fabric stashing. YES, I AM. I think my body is just naturally drawn to beautiful fabrics of all textures and patterns. After I read the description of the first sewing challenge of 2017 on TheMonthlyStitch I felt inspired. I am saying “NO” to fabric stashing! (at least for the month of January).

Right before Christmas I begged my husband to take me to Jo-Ann’s so I can hopefully pick up some interesting remnants, and I sure did. I picked up multiple pieces that I could play and experiment with, including this burnt/rust/brown and red sweater knit, that came in just under a yard. And then I had a little piece of this beautiful floral silk satin that I had in my “scrap bin”. I am not sure how, but I decided to pair these two materials, that I normally wouldn’t even put next to each other –  and it worked! I think that fabric coordinates beautifully, the ombre effect of the knit fabric adds an interesting touch and it is very easy to wear. You can pair it up or down – wear it with jeans like I did, or pair with tan skinny pants and high-heels. Possibilities are endless!

I enjoyed working on this project and busting my non-stashed fabric and my “scrap bin”! It was a little challenging to put knit and silk sating together and then attach binding – but after 2 tries it worked out.

Process: raglan sleeves are my favorite when it comes to constructing garments out of sweater knits – it fall beautifully and it is always fun to play with shapes and colors. I think when I use this pattern in the future I might make under arm triangle inserts in contrasting colors as well!
